Artist in Residence Prague: Mezikrok

Remix Comix residency entitled “Mezikrok”, hosted by LUSTR Festival, was held from July 1th  to 15th in Prague. The main output had two forms: firstly, a mural painting on the wall of the renowned Vnitroblock café, which was the result of the residents’ collaborative work. The second output is a website (www.mezikrok.cz) that provides clear information about the project to the public.

The Prague residency, led by curator Štěpánka Jislová, involved the following participants: illustrator Jakub Bachorík for the Czech Republic, graphic designer Asja Komadina for Serbia, sculptor Neža Jurman for Slovenia, dramaturge Indi Hoorweg for the Netherlands, and comic author Jana Adamović for Serbia.

“Mezikrok,” focused on raising awareness of the challenges faced by young adults leaving institutional care, with a particular emphasis on the issues encountered by those transitioning from children’s homes to independent adult life. These individuals, let down both by their families and society to some extent, enter adulthood with financial, social, and emotional deficits. Unofficial statistics suggest that at least half of them face a life on the streets, in prison, or premature death.

During the residency, educational lectures and workshops were conducted by experts from collaborating nonprofit organizations. They provided residents with statistical information about children’s homes in the Czech Republic, as well as share their personal experiences within this system. The lecture series also included team-building workshops.
